The Mutinous Peons

Another year, another round of the IPB fantasy league (hockey is totally coming, you guys!). Last year the Rabid Chinchillas puttered in to a rather middling finish. Part of the problem was that they were, well, just a wee bit pantywaisted. We got slaughtered in the penalty minutes category every week. Well, this year we've rebranded ourselves as the Mutinous Peons, sharpened our pitchforks, lit our torches, and begun taking our thuggish duties far more seriously. By which I mean that this time around we'll be featuring Chris Pronger with his flying elbows and stomping feet.

Returning players this year are Pavel Datsyuk, Alexander Frolov, Nicklas Lidstrom, and Brad Boyes (who was surprisingly useful last year). The team is delighted to have all of them back. I'm a little more familiar with the players this year than last, which means that the IPB league really has been a learning experience. So, without further ado:

Things I Am Most Happy With
  • Replacing unlikable Russian goalie Nikolai Khabibulin with endlessly entertaining Russian goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. We can only hope for more interviews like this well-known one.
  • Patty's favorite player, Philippe Boucher, joining the D. Hopefully he won't be spending this entire season injured even if he does look nice in a suit
  • Having an integrated team thanks to Dustin Byfuglien (hey, it's hockey, it makes even the town I grew up in look racially diverse).
  • Getting to keep best-player-in-the-world-even-if-the-media-wants-it-to-be-Ovechkin-or-Crosby Nick Lidstrom.
Our first opponent is Amy's The Little Honkers. They're going down.

Dustin Byfuglien was a Marauder last year -- I really loved him. I was tempted to ask you for a trade, but then decided it's a new season, and time to see what other players can do for me. I hope you guys have a great season together... but not THAT good a season.

You were going to offer me Kariya for him, weren't you? I'm sorry Schnookie, I simply wouldn't have been so cruel as to deny you the pleasure of having Kariya on your team.

I know virtually nothing about him so I'm glad to hear that he was a good Marauder. I like that he plays forward and defense as well--that's pretty nifty. :)

That's so thoughtful of you, saving me from a Kariya-less life. *grumble, grumble, grumble*

And yeah, the forward/defense combo is UNBEATABLE. There should be more guys like that. I was going to really sweeten the pot to try to wrest him from you (want Souray instead? :P), but then decided Byfuglien's ice time is going to shrink now that Soupy's in Chicago. My instincts as a fantasy GM have never been wrong before (HAHAHAHA!), so I decided to let you keep him. Heh.

Bouche does look good in a suit, doesn't he? Just keep him away from Pronger. :D

Seriously, though, if he's healthy (big if) he's a points producer on defense. If blocked shots were a stat, he'd be even better.

Brad Boyes is pretty good, I think much to everyone's surprise.

A word of advice Meg, just pick up Carcillo, then you can stock your team with as many Byng nominees as you want. You'll still collect plenty of PIMs. (Don't tell anyone I'm giving out free WC advice.) (p.s. the Kazoos are the team to beat. The Peons are toast!)

Boyes was a delightful surprise last year. I have high expectations this year. Hopefully he doesn't collapse under them like a bad souffle.

I'm sorry Andrew but you have to lose eventually and eventually is this year. You're going down!
